From STRF to STRD — is Michael Saylor just selling junk bonds?

From STRF to STRD — is Michael Saylor just selling junk bonds? Some followers of Michael Saylor have grown tired of his alliterative naming convention for a ballooning series of MicroStrategy (MSTR) preferred shares. After Strike, Strife, and now Stride, some shareholders just want to call a spade a spade. Indeed, according to several investors, his latest preferreds should be simply junk bonds . Saylor characterized Stride (STRD) as perpetual preferred stock with $100 of liquidation preference paying non-cumulative dividends at 10%. Bullish fans called his invention a “bitcoin black hole,” allowing time-space relocation of capital to benefit current MSTR shareholders with future opportunities. With Stride spinning this black hole, bullish shareholders saw “everything in the financial system being sucked in towards MicroStrategy.” Memes with singularity imagery proliferated across social media. David Bailey’s Nakamoto exceeded 23X mNAV, 11X higher than MSTR

Bitcoin Magazine’s David Bailey is hoping to merge some of his companies into publicly-traded Kindly, and the valuation investors placed on the merger put Michael Saylor to shame. Thanks in part to Saylor himself amplifying Bailey’s news with its difficult-to-calculate metrics, Bailey’s company briefly rallied to a multiple-to-Net Asset Value (mNAV) over 11X greater than Saylor’s company. The imputed value of Bailey’s fully converted entity, which will eventually be called Nakamoto, briefly exceeded a 20X mNAV this morning. This colloquial and imprecise valuation metric is popular among bitcoin (BTC)-focused equity investors. $KDLY is the newest merger that will form a $BTC holdings company. Let's figure out the current mNAV. Current $KDLY price per share: $29 Market Cap: $175 million Shareholders will own 1.2% of post-merger company. Michael Saylor Faces Backlash For Backing ”Too Big To Fail” Banks Over Self-Custody For Bitcoin

Image
MicroStrategy co-founder Michael Saylor came under fire after recommending that Bitcoin should be custodied through “too big to fail” banks, a shift from his earlier stance favoring self-custody. In an Oct. 21 interview with financial markets reporter Madison Reidy,  Saylor indicated that Bitcoin investors have nothing to lose by sending their BTC to regulated institutions for safe keeping.  An investor who thinks that state-sanctioned Bitcoin seizure is possible is a “paranoid crypto-anarchist,” he said. Michael Saylor Comments Slammed By Crypto Community During the interview, Saylor was asked whether the government will someday strip Bitcoin holders of their self-custody rights, similar to what it did in 1933 with gold. “It’s a myth and a trope that goes on over and over again,” he replied, before adding that there is just a lot of “unnecessary” fear in the market. MicroStrategy owns almost 2% of all circulating bitcoin — now what?

Bitcoin famously has a coded limit on how many of the asset can be mined going forward — an even 21,000,000 coins. At time of publication, more than 19.6 million of those 21 million bitcoins have been mined, meaning that 93% of all bitcoins that will ever be produced already have been.  While it’s impossible to determine exactly how many bitcoins have been lost — estimates range from 20% to nearly 40% — these lost coins play a crucial role in determining how widespread and evenly distributed ownership of the currency is. In this sense, what’s good for Michael Saylor and MicroStrategy might not be good for a decentralized protocol. According to the most recent 8K for MicroStrategy, the company holds 214,246 bitcoins. Ultimately, this means that one company now controls between 1.3% and 1.8% of all bitcoin that can ever be moved.
